Spring Is (Finally) Here

Spring started some time ago but here in Edmonton it is not so easy to feel it compared to other cities. Temperatures are still cool and sudden dumps of snow like we had yesterday certainly don’t help with the overall picture. Needless to say, it is warming up and as usual more listings are coming to market. If you are considering to sell, how are you going to make your home stand out amongst the competition? We will share some tips with you although the real secret is start early. If you want to list now, your home has to be in showhome condition, both inside and out.

Spring Cleaning

Cleaning during Spring

Now the weather is warming up you can finally open some windows to get fresh air throughout the place, but there are some more tricks you need to be aware of if you plan to sell. Open up your closets too. Sometimes coats and boots get put away wet and if left too long generate unpleasant odours. In these situations we use ozone treatment to eliminate odours. For the kitchen (possibly the most important part of any home when it comes time to sell) do the obvious things like clean the fridge inside as well as pull it out and clean behind. Kitchen hood fans often get covered in tiny oil drops from cooking. These collect dust and also odours so it’s a good idea to give them a thorough clean at least once a year, even the fan blades. Another place that is often overlooked is the underside and topside of kitchen cupboards. A time saving tip is to lay newspaper on the top of the cupboards. This will save you having to clean them each time, but there is not much you can do to cover the bottom. Remember to dust the baseboards and clean windows. Not just clean the glass, but make sure there is no mildew on the window sills. Keeping a home clean is like doing preventative maintenance and will help your home hold its value.

Spring Market Update

Last month we mentioned we are starting to see some movement in the market. While this is typical of this time of year and being in a spring market, we are seeing signs of improvement. We should also point out there are currently over 10,000 listings and only a small percentage of those sell each month, (Edmonton is still Buyer’s market) so if you are looking to sell you need to know what to do to make your home stand out from the crowd. As mentioned above, being prepared and getting your home in showhome condition for day one is important. The rest boils down to good marketing. We recently met a seller who had been trying unsuccessfully to sell their home for many months. They asked for our help and after making a few small changes and creating magnetic marketing material, it sold in just over a month. Needless to say the sellers are very impressed and grateful.

Spring Spring!

Recently Fionna asked when is it going to be Spring Spring? She clarified by adding, “you know, when the flowers come out”. As cute as that may be, it does shed some light on why Edmontonians in general can’t wait to get out and enjoy their backyard after 6 months being covered in snow. She is not the only one who is patiently waiting.
